We live in the Age of Political Correctness. For instance, White males have been effectively barred from any “notable fiction lists” published by The New York Times, Vulture, Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, Esquire, the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Prize for debut fiction, the National Book Award, and the Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford over the last six years, a report in Compact Magazine has revealed.
All of these platforms—previously the nation’s premier launching pads for young writers—have deliberately changed their admission and selection policies to exclude young White males, in particular. The “Notable Fiction” list of The New York Times has featured just two White millennial males out of 72 nominations since 2021, while Vulture’s 2024 year-end fiction list, Vanity Fair’s, and The Atlantic’s have zero.
Since 2020, Esquire has featured only one White male on its year-end book lists, along with the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Prize for debut fiction and the Wallace Stegner Fellowship.
This phenomenon extends beyond fiction, even to the realm of poetry. This is not because there are no talented White authors or poets, but rather because those organizations have become institutionally and irreversibly anti-White.
