The book’s most controversial aspect was, however, that it identified the Soviet officials behind the Gulag system and the secret police that oversaw it, revealing that 11 of the 12 major Gulag districts were run by Jewish communists.
This fact got the book censored until 1999, when it was republished (with omissions and errors) as Jewish-Run Concentration Camps in the Soviet Union. This new edition, however, faithfully follows the original, retaining the work’s earliest title, illustrations, and the appendix to the original German edition, which was omitted from all previous English editions.
