One of the many wild atrocity tales from World War II is the claim that, on June 10, 1944, a Waffen SS unit of the Das Reich Division carried out a mass civilian massacre in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in France. According to the official account, 643 civilians were murdered as collective punishment for local Resistance activities.
French Revisionist historian Vincent Reynouard, who devoted years to studying the event, has challenged this version with facts. While acknowledging that the population was indeed rounded up by the Germans, Reynouard argues that the massacre was actually triggered by a panic following the explosion of a Resistance ammunition cache in a church.
