Perhaps the most famous film to emerge from the Third Reich, Triumph of the Will (“Triumph des Willens”) was issued in 1935, directed, produced, edited, and co-written by Leni Riefenstahl.
The film was commissioned in person by Adolf Hitler, and he served an unofficial executive producer, with his name appearing as such in the opening credits.
The film became famous for the spectacle of the 1934 NSDAP rally in Nuremberg, attended by more than 700,000 supporters, and the large number of innovative camera techniques pioneered by Riefenstahl, which are still to the present day the film industry standard.
Contains excerpts of speeches at the rally, including Hitler, Rudolf Hess and Julius Streicher, and interspersed with mass rally footage.
Hitler praised the film as being an “incomparable glorification of the power and beauty of our Movement.” For her efforts, Riefenstahl was rewarded with the German Film Prize and a gold medal at the 1935 Venice Biennale, and the Grand Prix at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris.
