The film traces the policies that created and intensified the disaster, including forced collectivization, grain seizures, the confiscation of food, and restrictions that prevented starving villagers from leaving affected regions. It shows how rural communities were stripped of their harvests while Soviet officials continued to deny that a famine was taking place.
Eyewitnesses describe the destruction of families and villages, while historians place the catastrophe within Stalin’s wider campaign against resistance in Ukraine. Soviet propaganda footage is set against personal accounts of hunger, repression, and death, revealing the gulf between the official image of agricultural progress and the suffering experienced by the population.
