A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME …

In this July/August 2025 edition of THE BARNES REVIEW, we take a whirlwind tour through thousands of years of authentic history, starting nearly 5,000 years ago in Asia Minor and ending up in 21st-century Poland. Our lead story discusses the fabled city of Troy, made famous in Homer’s epic sagas The Iliad and The Odyssey. Often viewed as fictional myths, the tales are accepted as partially factual by many historians and archeologists. They insist a very real city existed there, and that multiple major conflicts took place at the site over the ages. In addition, both ancient Greek and Roman sources associated Troy with the city of Hisarlik, located near the Dardanelles, right where Homer says Troy sat. Listening to Homer, several prominent archeologists found the remains of a great city—as well as eight other “Troys” sitting one atop the other.

Thus, the question becomes: “Which Troy was Homer’s Troy?” Historian Elias Thornton tells us that the evidence found at Hisarlik/Troy indicates that the site was leveled by both natural disasters and invading armies over the millennia. But, since Homer never told us what year the Trojan War took place, Thornton has had to piece together the evidence from each of the nine excavation layers to see which one fits Homer’s descriptions most precisely—if at all. Thornton then tells us which of those incarnations is most likely Homer’s Troy, and whether the findings support or weaken claims of a major conflict be tween the ancient Greeks and Trojans having occurred there.

From Troy, we then travel to the Giza Plateau, where a trio of “historians” has announced a massive series of structures— the size of a city—is located thousands of feet below the famed pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. How exciting! Unfortunately, it’s fake news and history combined. Find out who has created this phony sensation and why in an article by historian Arthur Kemp.

From Egypt, we race across the globe to a small Reconstruction-era law office in Pulaski, Tennessee, to witness the formation of the Ku Klux Klan. In this article, we learn who actually started the Klan and why, all from the Klan’s official biographer, Susan Lawrence Davis.

We follow that up with an interview with Gene Andrews, the caretaker of the only surviving home of Confederate Cavalry Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest— and the first Grand Wizard of the original Ku Klux Klan.

From there we delve into the little-known but highly influential life of Rabbi Judah Alkalai, whose philosophical and religious beliefs helped forge the ideology of Theodor Herzl, considered to be the father of modern-day Zionism.

Following that, we examine the life of another prominent agitator who was integral to the formation of the Zionist state of Israel: Ze’ev Jabotinsky. It’s not an exaggeration to say that, wherever Jabotinsky went, a trail of blood and corpses followed. But there’s even more.
